Featuring Baykus Strigiformes from Baykus Interview by Ruud Dreessen aka ebm-industrial.nl Date: 9 december 2009 23:03

Thanks Baykus that you have found time to give answers to these questions,

1- For the first question will be - do you know the netherland?
- I know The Netherlands, but I have never been there.

2- Do you follow the electronic music scene, do you have any other favourite bands?
- I know very few bands of the electronic music scene. I know the old bands Front 242, A Split Second, Sturm Cafe, Nitzer Ebb, DAF etc. and some new EBM groups like Spetsnaz, Proceed etc.

3- Greetings Baykus could you please shortly introduce our readers your music project Baykus Please fill also a biographical resume about how, when and where...give us a more background information?
- The music is energetic, the music is heavy... but the music has a fragile side. I love the authentic electronic body music sound, and I want to some day see myself side by side with fellow friends of the genres. What stands out is my love for "Darkwave" music, which I try not to mix with EBM too much. I enjoy Futurepop/Dark-Electro/Industrial groups, but there's not enough EBM groups around. I think it's being overshadowed by all these other genres and needs to finally get the exposure it deserves.

I make the music in my spare time at home, on Mac OSX - I switch between Macbook and iMac.

4- How did you start to make Electro Industrial, EBM and what is EBM for you?
- I started making industrial when I started to find the right equipment. In High-school I made some "dark music" in my Music class, on Windows (Cubase) but my college exposed far better musical programs on Mac with more drum machines and it really opened up for me. I found out how music was made. Programs like Pro-Tools, Garageband and Logic Studio came of use to me and I still use them!

5- What and who are some of your influences in,Electro Industrial, EBM?
- Definitely I would have to say Laibach is one of the biggest influences. I know you can compare the sound to Nitzer Ebb, but Laibach have a lot of influence from DAF, and in recent years have used a lot of EBM overtones in their music. The EBM and Electro-industrial side varies mainly from Laibach, early Die Krupps, Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, KMFDM, Spetsnaz, Tyske Ludder to Covenant.

And the Darkwave side I would say bands like Clan of Xymox, Diary of Dreams, The Frozen Autumn, Project Pitchfork, TSOM, Seabound, Hocico, She Wants Revenge, :wumpscut: DM, Pink turns Blue, Mortiis and Wolfsheim. There are far more bands but those are the main ones, I would say!

6- What are your top ten favorite Electro Industrial, EBM Club Songs of all time? Who are you influenced by? What would you consider your favorite cd's?
- I have too many favorites! I love "Massnahmen zur Erhaltung der Macht" by Tyske Ludder... definitely one of my favorites! Best EBM album has to be Nitzer Ebb's That Total Age... A piece of work totally inspiring! Also "Back Catalogue" and "No Comment" by Front 242 are inspiring pieces of work...some of my favorite tracks are on there! Coil, Laibach and Einstürzende Neubauten's work always comes to mind when I think industrial... When you listen to their albums from beginning to end there's nothing to describe the feeling!

7- Do you have a favourite track and album?
- Judging by my iTunes, my favorite track is "When The Dreams Become Memories" by The Frozen Autumn... a pure darkwave song that always moves me from beginning to end. Favourite album? Maybe not...there's way too many, even more than my influences! Haha.

8- So tell me a bit more about yourself, such as musical?
- I'm still finding new ideas and learning about the genres I'm trying to add to. I hope to find a partner too, our project Baykus is still a solo project, we have little equipment at the moment so most the sonsg are mixed in Logic Stuio 8 :)

9- By the way do you like my questions? tell me what you think about it! ;-)
- Yes, I'm enjoying answering them :) Thanks for taking the time to ask them.

10- What is the main idea, the message you want to leave to people who listens to you? What is your motto?
- Find what gets you angry and use it to your advantage!

11- What's the name of your band? What's the origin of that name? Have you changed the band's name before?
- Baykus. I've never thought of a band name until a few months ago, so there is no pre-name. :)

12- "Cancer" where did the concept come from? and whats planned now that your album is finished? or anything else you're working on? Tell me why this title,Cancer" Tell us a few words about the concept of this?
- Cancer is going to be the title of our album. The idea comes from the Star-sign as opposed to the disease, but I want that idea to come across. It's kind of personal to me my views on Cancer, being a Pisces. We're supposed to be compatible when we're really not - I've been messed up by a lot of people who fall into the starsign of Cancer and I want to exploit most of what I've had to deal with: Anger, insanity and frustration.

13- When's the new album coming out?
- There is no planned release date, the songs are being re-evaluated at the moment and new ones are being added! Mixing songs is quite hard :P I produce and mix them all myself. Cancer is being worked on and hopefully will be finalized when Baykus has more members! :) We hope to find 1 or 2 drummers.

14-How is the current promotional tour going for supporting this album?
- Touring is not being planned yet, but we hope to unleash ourself live as soon as possible! :)

15- What do you think of a modern,Electro Industrial, EBM and about EBM scene?
- I think it's very heavy and hard! Great listening, rather I know the bands or not... Even the pop stuff, even the horrible songs... It's all brilliant!

16- Our usual question - what is,Electro Industrial, EBM for you?
- Electro-industrial is Heavy beats, electro, drum machines... for example Combichrist. EBM for us has always has a punk-influenced edge, aggression is a big staple in EBM and it separates itself from Electro-industrial genres :)

17- What was your best live experience so far?
- Best live experience so far was seeing a black metal band I can't remember the name of Haha! They were playing at a bar in Croydon. I loved the energy.

18- Please list the name, age, school, and respective instrument of each band member
- At the moment we have one member :) His name is Daniel, 19, Unemployed, Logic Studio/Ultrabeat Drum Machine/Vocals/Music

19-What are your views on the current state of this ,Electro Industrial, EBM scene in London and South East Verenigd Koninkrijk.in terms of creativity and audiences? And the scene in other countries?
- I heard there are bigger scenes in Belgium, Germany and Sweden... It's a shame because I have to learn about my favorite styles online! I'm not sure of what the scene looks like in the UK, but I have found a few industrial bands locally that I've added to myspace!

20- you have very nice numbers`.............. tell me about lyrical compositions what you can tell about the done work? How does your music creation process work? How do you create a song?
- I always start with the beat! It's just the best haha. Then I lay down the bass that comes to mind... Then music any other instruments I feel. Encorporating the ambience and background noises comes after, then I listen to it in full. I always change my mind so I go back to the song add/subtract until it's musically finished. The last thing I do to a track is add vocals :)

21-What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
Genre: Experimental/Electronic/Old School EBM/ - Our music is only sometimes Gothic or Darkwave...but it's mainly Experimental in sound :)

22-Since the music industry is more open now to purely electronic music has this made things easier for you?
- I hope it does! I'm not quite yet sure about the music industry... there's been no exposure.

23-So what are their main influences as a band at the moment?
- Laibach, Nitzer Ebb and Covenant, She Wants Revenge. Musically the influence is from a lot of genres: Neofolk, Dark ambient, Martial Industrial, 80s New Wave, Punk, Old school EBM, Progressive music, Goth rock... There are far too many bands to list! haha

24-What is currently inspiring your material as an artist? tell me all about the ,Electro Industrial, EBM scene of London and South East Verenigd Koninkrijk?
- The scene in London I'm not really familiar with yet! I hope to find EBM artists, as I've seen none at the moment. All the industrial bands we've come across are complex in sound... I think that's why the simplicity of Electronic Body Music needs to be re-discovered. Up-beat Drum machine beats, aggressive vocals and powerful bass lines. That's what is inspiring me as and artist!

25-Do you think that people from the music press didn't expect you to grow up musically?
- As I've mentioned before we've had no music press yet, we are a very young band by a couple of months :)

26-what is the key to making music from Baykus and what inspires you to keep growing as a musician?
- Beauty in simplicity, definitely. I love the silence in between each note, in between each beat... it's quite powerful.

27-How do you see the future of download / Copyright in area of goth-,Electro Industrial, EBM music ? What are the best ways to develop it in your mind ?
- I say live is the area which is always growing. Copyright is a huge issue, but I want CDs and vinyl records to last for the rest of my life. I hope we never convert completely to downloading... I enjoy CD artwork and booklets! It adds a lot of background to it rather than downloading an mp3 file... You have a physical copy.
28-If there was one thing you want people to know about your band what would that be?
- I would like people to know that we're crazy about dancing! When we're angry, we dance. When we're sad, we dance. When we're happy too.

29-Please let us know about your upcoming plans, some new releases you like to confirm here
- We hope to finalize Cancer, first things first! Currently Baykus is working on a cover of The Mission's Blood Brother! More information will be given out on our myspace blog. Also, we're working on getting our "EBM" songs into a "Darkwave" style with vocals... It will be great!
30-It has been a pleasure to interview you on your musical activity,Well, any last words to your ebm-industrial fans?
- Keep clubbing! Keep gigging! Haha!

31-and what is next on London and South East Verenigd Koninkrijk agenda?
- Finding our band members definitely!
32-thanks for your time! great work on the albums and good luck with everything.any How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?
- We have different music on each of our websites... No homepage as yet, but we have Myspace, Youtube and Last.FM where you can hear our songs in full!

33-Were you asked to play or did you have to ask for a slot?
- We've not been asked to a gig yet :) Thanks for the questions! Take care, Baykus
