Featuring Dan |from D-ToX Interview by Ruud Dreessen aka ebm-industrial.nl | 2 januari 2010 17:42
For the first question will be - Thanks Dan that you have found time to give answers to these questions,How are you doing?
No problem! We are doing very well, thank you!
How's the start of 2010 been for you thus far?
Hectic! Were in the middle of working on new songs and making a remix for another Swedish band. There is also a plan to record a video for one of our tracks.
do you know the netherland?
Yes ofcourse! We have never had the pleasure to travel there yet but hopefully someone will like us and invite us to you beautiful country soon enough ;)
For a lot of people, this is probably going to be their first full introduction to D-ToX so how about you tell us a little bit about how you guys know each other and how the band came together?
Dan: I started the band myself 2006. During that time D-ToX were never ment to be anything serious, just me fooling around with some electronic music, I released a simple instrumental song and people really liked it so I started to write a couple of more songs for a demo. It was during that time I asked Mattias to join on live drums to make the liveshows a bit more interesting. About a year later we had finished our first demo and were really proud of it, we got to play some shows during 2007-2008. As we started to write some new songs, we were not really happy with the music we were making, instrumental music just didn't cut it for us, so we started experimenting with a new sound, added some harsh vocals to the mix and Voila! We came to the conclusion that we were more comfortable with the music now then before.
Do you follow the electronic music scene, do you have any other favourite bands?
Dan: I try to keep track of a few bands but I wouldn't say I know everything going on.
How is your relationship with other electronic bands?
The bands we have had the pleasure to meet with have been very good, we try to have a open and polite mind towards other musicians. Its always great to go out to clubs or play gigs with other bands since you always find polite people who are willing to share their experience.
Can you give us a brief run-through of D-ToX story so far?
Dan: I started the band in 2006 and about a year later we finished our first demo. During 2007-2008 we wrote some new songs and did a fue live shows. During 2009 we really got it together and really started writing some new stuff that were more "our type" of music.
How did you start to make Industrial / Electro and what is Industrial / Electro for you?
Dan: Ive always enjoyed music with a bit of a harder beat to it, so when I started to make music on my own it just felt natural to make music that was to my liking.
What did you guys do for a living before D-ToX?
Some of us had work, some of us was in school.
What are your top ten favorite Industrial / Electro Club Songs of all time? Who are you influenced by? What would you consider your favorite cd's?
Dan: Im usually influenced by music that I like. Don't really care about the genre, its more or less just to be able to make something that I myself would like and want to hear.
What are the future plans for D-ToX?
We are going to release a couple of songs early 2010 and after that try to get in touch with some Clubs who want us on their stage. We really want to get out and promote our songs and make a name for ourselves in the electronic community. We are also working on a video for our track Evil Inside, wich we are going to start shooting really soon.
Do you have a record label? Are you a member of any music organizations?
We don't have a record-deal at the moment.
How is the relationship between the band members?
Were all just a bunch of friends.
By the way do you like my questions? tell me what you think about it! ;-)
Good ;)
What is the main idea, the message you want to leave to people who listens to you? What is your motto?
We don't have a motto or a message with our music. We just want to make good music and hope people will enjoy it!
There usually is some meaning or a "story" behind the lyrics but no message.
What's the name of your band? where did the name come from? or what's the story behind the band name?
The band name we took from a movie called D-TOX…nothing fancy there. Since the band were never ment to be serious I didn't care what I called the band.
If people don't know what you and your music are about, how would you describe D-ToX?
Energetic, hard beats, pounding basslines and vocals from hell ;)
where did the concept come from? and whats planned now that your album is finished? or anything else you're working on? Tell us a few words about the concept of this?
Right now were focusing on releasing a couple of new songs we have been working on for some time and after that we hope to get a couple of live shows booked for 2010. We are also finishing a remix for another Swedish band and were gonna record a video to our track Evil Inside.
What do you think of a modern Gothic and about Industrial / Electro scene?
Depends on where you look, in Sweden its not that big and its usually the same bands who get to play live in clubs and such. Sweden is more old school EBM/Synthpop oriented in my mind so there isn't that big of a market for bands with music similar to ours. If you look in for example Germany, theres a much bigger market for all types of eletronic music.
What's your favourite track of yours?
Dan: For me, I would have to say, Evil Inside. It's the song that really gets you going when you listen to it and it.
Mattias: I say the same as Dan, Evil Inside.
What and who gets you excited about music today?
When you for the first time hear that amazing song that you cant stop listening to. No matter what type of music it is.
What was your best live experience so far?
We have not played that many live shows yet so hard to answer that question. But its always nice when you see that the people watching are really enjoying themselves, dancing and just having a wonderful time, it really gives us energy to do a better performance.
What are your views on the current state of this Industrial / Electro scene in Lund / Bromölla Zweden .in terms of creativity and audiences? And the scene in other countries?
Like I said, there isn't that big of a community for electronic music in Sweden. A lot of our festivals like "SAMA and Tinitus" are no longer active and most clubs in Sweden don't have livebands on a regular basis. Most people would rather go out to a club with DJs playing than to see a band play.
you have very nice numbers` tell me about lyrical compositions what you can tell about the done work? How does your music creation process work? How do you create a song?
Dan: When I start writing a song its usually with a beat in mind, I try to keep it simple in the beginning and than I start to add different elements to the song that I consider to be something of our own, to put a touch of D-ToX on the song.
What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
Dan: Its hard to put in a specific genre but I think where somewhere in the Aggrotech genre with bands like Agonoize and Suicide Commando are a big part of the scene.
Since the music industry is more open now to purely electronic music has this made things easier for you?
Not really.
What is currently inspiring your material as an artist? tell me all about the Industrial / Electro scene of Lund / Bromölla Zweden?
What inspires us to make music is that someday we will be able to travel around Europe or the world and promote our music and our sound.
what is the key to making music from D-ToX and what inspires you to keep growing as a musician?
Dan: For me, its always a matter of "Can I make this any better". I am very hard to satisfy when it comes to actually releasing a song, I spend hours and hours checking and re-checking every second of the song to find something I can make better and with time you learn to master different techniques that help you to make your music sound just a little bit better. So it's a process of constant developing the way I write music.
How do you see the future of download / Copyright in area of goth-Industrial / Electro music ? What are the best ways to develop it in your mind ?
Instead of working against it, work with it.
If there was one thing you want people to know about your band what would that be?
That we got an awesome and energetic liveshow. A lot of bands jus go up on stage, play their music and go home, we really give it 110% every time were on stage and that gets the crowd wild.
Please let us know about your upcoming plans, some new releases you like to confirm here
We are working on some new material right now wich will be published early 2010, im finishing a remix for another Swedish band and we are gonna start shooting a video for our track Evil Inside very soon!
It has been a pleasure to interview you on your musical activity,Well, any last words to your ebm-industrial fans?
Thank for listening to us! Without you, we would be nothing!
How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?
Right now the only way is through myspace but if someone really likes our music ofcourse we can send some songs to them.
How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
Its gotten harder, better and sounds more like the music we want to be known for.
How is the new line-up working out?
Great! Its an awesome group of people we are really committed and working hard to promote the band.
What are you currently listening to on your MP3 player?
All kinds of different stuff.
And, finally, what does the next twelve months hold for the band?
A lot of live-shows hopefully, we are really commited in making 2010 our best year so far and were gonna work harder then ever to promote the band and speak to every single club in Europe ;)
