Featuring  ANGELO BERGAMINI | Interview by Ruud Dreessen aka ebm-industrial.nl | Date:Thur,12 Feb 2009 1:26:01 From: Kirlian Camera

Thanks ANGELO BERGAMINI that you have found time to give answers to these questions,

Can you introduction Kirlian Camera? Why did you choose for Kirlian Camera band name? Kirlian Camera is a name connected with one of the most important darkwave bands. How did you came up with that name?
ANGELO BERGAMINI: It was right me opting for the name in 1980 ( Elena was 1 year old, more or less, at the time!). I did choose it as in that period I was a bit into the esoteric mood. You know, the camera conceived by Russian scientist Semyon Kirlian with a help from his wife is supposed to be able to catch the so-called “aura” around human beings, animals, etc… Somebody asserts it’s just the soul. It wasn’t that bombastic name, in a way, but I needed “a flag” being able to support me/us throughout the years, something not being too close to any particular momentary trend, fashion…

Tell me more about Italian / German / Korean Electro band? tell me about your Side-project of Kirlian Camera?
ANGELO BERGAMINI: Stalingrad is a side-project involving myself and Elena as far as writing lyrics and music is concerned. A “pompous” project having symphonic echoes mixed up with a little bit of humour that will be recording some new stuffs through the next months. Then there’s SPECTRA*paris, but it isn’t a mere side-project, rather being a real band, a female one, having Elena as a leader, writing both music and lyrics. SPECTRA*paris is really giving us some big satisfactions. That mix of noir spy stories, fashion and erotic ingredients is nothing but huge involving… my favorite act, today, no doubt. It sounds as if glam rock were thrown directly into the future, not exploiting old clichees at all costs. Bolan, Bowie and so on are great, but inventing something fresher today is important and rare: I guess that this band is doing a miracle, in this direction!

you have many full album 1980 / 2008 the lyrical, compositions what you can tell about the done work?
ANGELO BERGAMINI: we did mistakes, we did good things, but this decade is giving me the biggest satisfactions. The last album “Shadow Mission HELD V” is a real and dramatic “concentrate” of our real soul. I guess that the early works made in the ‘90s are overestimated. I really appreciate Kirlian Camera more in the new millenium and in the 80’s. No possible comparison as for quality and inspiration goes…

Can you will tell a little about the main themes of the lyrics and tell a little about names of compositions?
ANGELO: rather uneasy to say, as our lyrics tell about our own world and I don’t think our world may be so familiar to many other people, all in all. Our lyrics, our music are telling about another life and, in the meanwhile, about the everyday’s life on this planet. Many people can appreciate our style, but a few may really feel what’s happening on the worlds I mentioned above. We are not misanthropists, but arch enemies of “humanity” and its politics in general.  We don’t believe in evil or goodness. We believe in impossible concepts. Speaking on is really useless, now.

Can you tell me of this album in comparison with the previous works?Than you are inspired at creation of the music? What you're watching/read/listen?
ANGELO: this album, entirely composed, arranged and produced by Elena and myself, it’s about strange missions on planet Europa (Jupiter’s satellite). Not so many years ago, the Ansa agency spread a brief news, telling that a Russian researcher found traces of a real city under the surface of the planet. I don’t know what kind of system he used to localize such a city, of course… but I know many weird things are happening on Europa. “Shadow Mission Held V” regards some dramatic secret facts, not forgetting the fact that so much of our own life is included in such a work, on metaphorical shape. Strange memories, strange days… everyday’s life, but… something almost unbelievable.

What you could tell about a modern condition of an EBM/ industrial scene?
ANGELO: well, do you really want me to say the truth?!? No, I’d better keep some diplomatic silence, believe me…

In the near future? What to all of us should be expected from your new albums?
ANGELO: the next albums are just the first real “best of Kirlian Camera”, called “Odyssey Europa” and the first real live album, to be released both on DVD & audio-CD. Two very “big” projects. Then, we will see…

Tell, how an album have accepted in the music world? what are the musical influences of Kirlian Camera?Well, what you can tell about performances Kirlian Camera? Or more studio project?
ANGELO: our influences are several but none of them has been so deep. We like to listen to Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, The Rockets (the French electronic band, not the other most recent combo from somewhere), Nico, Zbigniew Preisner, Angelo Badalamenti, Ennio Morricone, Gyorgy Ligeti,  Krzysztof Penderecki, Max Bruch, Gustav Mahler, Richard Wagner, Arvo Pärt, Klaus Schulze, early Tangerine Dream, Giorgio Moroder, Fausto Rossi, etc. By the way, I guess Elena’s SPECTRA*paris is going to collaborate soon with The Rockets…

What can you tell about your Kirlian Camera work? Let's lead parallels with your album and today's work.
ANGELO: Today’s Kirlian Camera is the band I feel respect for. Elena brought us real “energy”. This project was but just a one-man-band, before her arrival in 2000 and that isolation was a bit frustrating, sometimes. Working with Elena is giving me/us  a chance to really make the music we want to listen to, then. She’s an incredible singer and composer… Our old works had no chance to get her  priceless help, although still I feel respect for pre-2000 chapters such as “Todesengel”, “Eclipse”, Unidentified Light” and some minialbums, especially “Drifting” and “The desert inside”.

How do you think on what listeners should pay attention listening to this albums?
ANGELO: maybe some of them will feel they are not alone… unfortunately.

a happy to interviews you ,what your musical activity began as a hobby and has then turned to obsession?
ANGELO: it never was a hobby, but a terrible curse.

Also what do you think of a modern condition of an ebm/electro /industrial scene? You have favourite bands?
ANGELO: no preference. They all are so great! Real artists. Real musicians. Inspired talents. Compliments!

Well, and at last some words to your ebm-industrial fans? Any last words for ebm-industrial.nl
ANGELO: don’t follow those stupid and pathetic masks croaking and farting all around you with no real ideas, offering records made in 2 days while watching TV or stressing up playstation. Being “anarchists” and “nihilists” is so simple, today, and sometimes it risks to hide a “couldn’t-care-less attitude”. So, I really need something less boring… do you?!?

Thanks ANGELO BERGAMINI and on behalf of ELENA ALICE FOSSI and the band Kirlian Camera
