Featuring Rummelsnuff | Interview by Ruud Dreessen aka ebm-industrial.nl | 12-aug 2009
Thanks Rummelsnuff that you have found time to give answers to these questions,For the first question will be - do you know the netherlands
I wish to know the Netherlands better, than I do now. Was for 2 short stays in Amsterdam once in 1996, once in 2003, and this is definately not enough to say: I know the Netherlands.
Greetings Rummelsnuff could you please shortly introduce our readers your music project Rummelsnuff?
Rummelsnuff is a singing and songwriting Powerlifter and Bouncer who created his „derbe Strommusik“ which unites german song traditions, influences of electro and industrial sounds of the eighties, shanties and workers songs and hundreds of other influences-completed by the experiences and the songwriting of Rummelsnuff.
Please fill also a biographical resume about how, when and where... Rummelsnuff was founded in ..... give us a more background information?
Born in 1968 in Großenhain, near Dresden (East Germany)- father was a Jazz-Posaunist in the 1950’s/60’s. Learned to play the bassoon, played in the local symphonic orchestra,
left the small town, and joined in Dresden the underground band Freunde der italienischen Oper, which existed till 1992, after that 4 years with the industrial project Automatic Noir…after split of the band fed up with music, tours, clubs and moneylessness.
Worked as Trainer and Bouncer- trained 6 times a week, weighed 120 kg (at 176 height), had a 54-biceps. After many quiet years I met the norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard, also lifting, of course in a gym. Times became wilder again and finally he encouraged me to
be Rummelsnuff and write music again.
How did you start to make EBM and what is EBM for you ?
EBM is an important energy to me. The aggressivity of machines. It is one powersource for my music!
My first trials to make EB;M were in gthe later eighties. Had no computer yet, no modern technics for the period- there was nothing available in the east…or it costed a fortune. Just had an old Solina Strings (kind of a huge heavy Organ) and a small Casio from Supermarket in WestBerlin, my grandmother brought .(young people weren’t allowed to travel to the west)
So my first EBM was very handmade. The beats hand-drummed on strange selfbuilt drums, recorded on magnet tapes and played the typic EBMlike synthriffs per hand on these beats,
more or less continuing and recordes the whole thin again and screamed some words in the cheap mic.
I felt so close to my big big idols: DAF!
How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together? What and who are some of your influences in EBM
Number one: DAF!
What are your top ten favorite EBM / Industrial Club Songs of all time?
Right now in this moment:
Als wärs das letzte Mal… DAF
Make A Device… Invincible Spirits
Give To You… Nitzer Ebb
Verschwende Deine Jugend… DAF
Der Mussolini DAF
Die Rock T.W.A.T.
The Great Seal… Laibach
Geburt einer Nation… Laibach
Aengelmaker…Leather Strip
Keine Melodien… Peaches
Fett in die Fresse… Rummelsnuff mit Shamov
And Bonus:
Der Heizer…Leather Strip feat. Rummelsnuff
Tell one secret about Rummelsnuff that you have never told to anyone?
At my last week’s back workout, I’ve missed the 200 kg in deadlifting.
so tell me a bit more about yourself, such as musical?
Working on managing the 200 again, and back to my old shape with even more than that.
By the way do you like my questions? ;-)
More and more.
You know there are lot of fans of ebm-industrial in the netherlands,We have organized a contest. and we have received hundreds of questions from your fans and if it is possible you will choose the most interesting one for you What is the main idea, the message you want to leave to people who listens to you? What is your motto?
OK, the questions become more difficult. Lets try.
Rummelsnuff is a sportsman, and as a sportsman he makes strong music and lyrics for strong people. Music for gym or car, lyrics for men like in „Ringen“ or about work and workers- completed by folk-melodies and industrial noise.
But strong people also can be weak sometimes. For these moments, which I know very well, I wrote sailor ballads like „Halt‘ durch!“ – which tells about a failed love story and compares it to storms on the sea which you can resist, when you have faith in yourself.
I know the first question is always boring but could you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about the stuff that you do?
But I KNOW: this question is eveything else but not the first one!
What’s the name of your band? What’s the origin of that name? Have you changed the band’s name before?
Starting my second musical life in 2005 after long years in the Weightlifting Room I was looking in the mirror and out of the window and back in the mirror and I knew: I am Rummelsnuff. This name can’t be changed anymore.
When you start to record a new album, is all the writing done or does it continue in the studio?
This is a good question too. The Album is nearly done. All songs are written…but maybe you inspire me to one new song yet, when i come to Tilburg in September!
When it will be published, I don’t know yet…having trouble with my label, which is another wide field.
We hope we have it in winter 2009/10.
where did the concept come from? and whats planned now that your album is finished? or anything else you're working on? Tell me why this title "halt durch!" 2008"? Tell us a few words about the concept of this CD?
The concept comes from this life, out of this shaved head-it’s just me…But perhaps Me as a comic character.
The title of this song was good for the album title too- it’s easy and short and fits to the whole layout. I talked already about the content of the song, some questions ago.
When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?
The live Band is changing..Rummelsnuff works on many ways: EBM with guitars, EBM just Electronic and Solo and theres even an acoustic program- either with a big brass band or another one just with accordion and balalaika, singing german sailor songs and russian army hymns!
so tell me about te labels Zickzack/Indigo?
„Zickzack“ is the other Name of the label „What‘s so funny about“ they worked with
Einstürzende Neubauten, KMFDM and so many other great artists.
Some say, Alfred Hilsberg, the owner, invented the NDW (Neue Deutsche Welle) 1980.
Rummelsnuff can be seen in this tradition.
Are you a member of any music organizations ore sport
No
How is the current promotional tour going for supporting this album?
Not promoting, just playing and singing and want to contact people who feel touched by my music.
What do you think of a modern music and about EBM scene ? Our usual question - what is EBM for you?
I told this in former questions, my young friend! Look up to the beginning of our conversation!
What was your best body /muscles in EBM? (electronic body music) your body is nicy very nice.......
My best muscle? You mean my strongest body part? This is my trapezius…and my back maybe.
Even if I got this question wrong, you know how to make compliments. Thanks!
Please list the name, age, school, and respective instrument of each band member
Sorry, this is too long, since my musicians are changing often! But I ve made a Hall of Fame on my Website. Most of the guys and girls who are or were involved are listed there!
What are your views on the current state of this electro scene in Germany.in terms of creativity and audiences? And the scene in other countries?
Maybe Rummelsnuff is too busy about himself and his new record, to be able to give a satisfying answer.
But Rummelsnuff had contact with Jäger 90 and the other great fellow guys from and around Electric Tremor in Dessau.
Drank a whole night away with the Schwefelgelb-Boys and played with Egotronic.
But the highlight this year was Familientreffen 5 in Sandersleben.
Have you been there? If not, shame on you- be there next year!
you have very nice album`and many many more tell me about lyrical compositions what you can tell about the done work? How does your music creation process work? How do you create a song?
A Song can happen on many ways. The most common for me is, playing on a pianokeyboard and palying and creating and joining harmonies (or disharmonies).
If the music is finished, i use to listen in my car or wherever to this instrumental music and finally I find the right words. But sometimes it works exactly the other way.
What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
I call it derbe Strommusik- and am not really able to translate it 1:1 into another language…
Derbe- means crude but not destructive…Strom- is current, electronic- is also strength and energy.
What do you do to chill out?
Believe it or not: one of my best chill outs I have at the door of the club in Berlin I work as a doorman, few times in month (when I am in town, and not on tour.)
This gives me silence, because I can think about nothing- no songs, no weights, no organizing…
Another way is: being near the water. Berlin has a lot of nice lakes and rivers and forests. By the way: I am outdoor swimming also in winter. I wrote a song about fun of iceswimming „Winterlied“ (on my next album)
What are your favorite EBM music? and What is your favorite EBM band?
DAF, Laibach, Leather Strip, KMFDM …urgh…who else…so many great powerful bands
Out of all of your album, ore your up coming album, which album would you say is your favorite album? Why?
The next one is the favourite of the both- Because I am busy with it right now. The old one I’ve heard often- or better: I played the songs often.
So what are their main influences as a band at the moment?
At one side it’s still the good old electronic music- and especially my new contact to Claus Larsen/Leather Strip. He made remixes of 4 Rummelsnuffsongs.
The other main influence is the acoustic stuff. Some questions before i’ve told about my love to russian war songs and sailor songs. Working with accordion players and brass bands. And the most interesting will be, to bring these two kinds together!
What is currently inspiring your material as an artist? tell me all about the EBM scene of Germany?
I know the german scene more from my eastgerman angle: the main label in the east german EBM is Electric Tremor. I am not on this label but we are good fellows and make a lot of events together.
Do you think that people from the music press didn't expect you to grow up musically?
Some might have think so. And you? Do you think I did?
what is the key to making music from Rummelsnuff? and what inspires you to keep growing as a musician?
Helping people to develope strength- not only physically!
How do you see the future of download / Copyright in area of goth-EBM music ? What are the best ways to develop it in your mind ?
This question i can‘t answer in an satisfying way too. I don’t know too little about merchandise.
For myself I‘d miss the printed covers an booklets of a record or a CD. But this is a question of taste.
If there was one thing you want people to know about your band what would that be?
Rummelsnuff is available for concerts in the Netherlands!
what do you do in your spare time?
Which part is it, the spare time part? My nights at a clubdoor? My hours in the weightsroom with or without my sportsfriend? Or the rare quiet days in the forest by the riverside?
If not lifting, eating or making music often on the road by bycicle or my old Mercedes Benz W123. Sometimes have to repair this one…in my spare time.
What do you think of its intermingling with the EBM scenes? while electro is your main musical pallet, what other music do you listen to?
Thanks for this question! There are sure many more musical influences than EBM in my mind! What I do, is actually nothing else than mixing the elements of tradtional songs
or Rockabilly or Oi! or Chanson or whatever with electronic.
I love to listen to russian choirs, to Serge Gainsbourg and Dark Wave, to Sisters of Mercy and the Smiths, and as mentioned to DAF and Laibach.
How long have you been in the music industry and how has it changed over time? Now I have to ask, what's the inspiration for the Rummelsnuff story?.
Rummelsnuff started in 2005…the charakter of Rummelsnuff came straight from the weightliftingroom up to stage.Rummelsnuff brings the soundtrack to the strong moments in your life and helps you over the weaker ones! „Halt durch!-Stay strong!“
Please let us know about your upcoming plans, some new releases you like to confirm here
The second Rummelsnuff CD is in the making, release will be in winter 2009/2010.
Also there will appear some remixes, edited by Claus Larsen (leather Strip), by World Domination, and some other Bands and DJs.
How and why did you begin to make EBM? Why various electronic styles? tell us about your unique style of music and who are your major influences? Where do you typically get your inspiration for EBM?
This is the biggest question in that round, my friend! Consists of 4 parts!
I think the most of your questions I’ve answered before in the text. OK- I take „unique“ as a compliment. The way to this music is maybe a wide range of influences but i dont let influences rule.
The biggest part in my work is not any special kind of music- it is me with my experiences and all collected influences from the last 4 decades.
Awesome! Tell me, are there any new bands out there lately that you're into, any tips for the future? Are you working on any current or future projects? What is the future for your music?
I wish I knew, how the future will be.
Besides my new record, there are plans for some film projects. Rummelsnuff sometimes is an actor…yes he is…for example with the director Edwin Brienen from Amsterdam.
