Featuring Stefan and Torbjörn| Interview by Ruud Dreessen aka ebm-industrial.nl Date:Wednesday 4 March 2009 From: Captain Orange
Thanks Stefan and Torbjörn / Captain Orange that you have found time to give answers to these questions,
Greetings Captain Orange could you please shortly introduce our readers your music project Captain Orange? Please fill also a biographical resume about how, when and where...
We started the band in 2003 after a fantastic concert by ministry at the Arvika festival. We looked at each other and the (now days well known) fantastic idea came out "we should't bee here, we should be there" gazing at the empty mainstage. So Stefan had some songs written and Torbjörn had the tecnical knowledge, so we recorded some songs with a singer called kenneth (ex Prestige, one of Sweden oldest electrobands, dead sing long gone, the band I mean) But things didn't work out as we thought so Stefan took the microfon and been a singer since 2004. We recorded some demos, got some gigs, had a great time, but we wanted to get further. We wanted a contract! In earley 2006 we got a records deal with Crazybear records and our first self titled Ep we're seeing the light in June. A real cool release party we're held in our hometown at PL13. Our next step we're to release a full lengt album and that we did in spring 2007, First we put out a single, by the name of "Stars", then the "X-Terminator" album since then we have records a lot of songs, played at festivals, clubs some private party. In 2008 we got a new records company Cynical-minds, released the single/Ep "Miss Grey and now in 2009 we will release a new Single EP and a new full length album.
What and who are some of your influences in music
It depends who you ask in the band, but we can tell you that we listen to a lot of different kinds of music, What we have in common is that we like Goth, Electro, ebm and classical music
What are your top ten favorite EBM / Industrial Club Songs of all time?
OHH MY GOSH, THAT IS DIFFICULT! Can we do some namedropping of bands instead? Okay VNV Nation, Covenant, Ministry, Depeche Mode, Apoptygma Bezerk, Hocico, Evils Toy, Rotersand, Mesh, but not in that particular order
Tell one secret about yourself or the band that you have never told to anyone?
Okay, it we're at the Void Spring festival at 2008, we we're abot to play before Welle Erdball. Stefan hade to change to his Captain outfit and he was undressing ( hade my trousers down my feet) in the backstage area, Standing there almost nude the two loveley ladies in welle came in..Nothing more than i was blushing happened, and the ladies laught out loud
so tell me a bit more about yourself, such as musical?
A filosofy we always have is to explore music and not let an album have 12 songs that sounds the same, that we find is very common today. Before Captain Orange we played in lots off diffrent bands
and diffrent kinds of music, susch as punk, deatmetal, rock, indie, Irish folkmusic and in some (not that succesfull) coverbands and many more styles of music. We can play a lot of diffren instruments but creating new sounds is what we do now and it's such fun
how and why did you come about starting Captain Orange? what else inspires you to create?
Most of the inspiration, we find in our common lives. But when we meet in our studio something happens, a great energy combines us and drives us further into the musical landscape. When we get problems in the making of songs it's almost a good thing, cause then we have to think indiffrent terms about the songs and it always makes it better.
Okay tell me a few things about.Captain Orange How did you decide to form this project, give us a more background information
Look in the biografy
Let's talk about your miss grey mixen by Neurobash and deZeptive
Two diffren bands but with lovley people in them, they don't sound the same as us and that’s a good thing when you choose people for remixes. De Zeption gave us the danceremix we needed for the dj's and Neurobash gave us the moore oldschool beat to make a perfect blend in the EP
where did the concept come from? and whats planned now that your album is finished?
The plan is to make better albums better songs, touring worldwide, aming for world domination :)
or anything else you're working on ?
At this moment we're working on some great songs with our producers, we're not shure wich is the best for a single right now but hopefully we know wich songs that's going to end up at the new single and the ned full length album. We have some great song for the future but we want to do our best with them. Thats why it's taking time
Tell me why this title "Miss grey "?
It's about not dare to face you're demons inside, about not becoming a whole person, and accept who you are, with you're good sides and bad sides
Tell us a few words about the concept of this album?
Ha ha ha ha! Concept..... I think it was the fastest album ever made, when they arrived at the release party at 22.00 tehy we're still hot from the presses, everything took just a week to do, but we worked the whole week to make it happend. We had some demoversions of the songs but the really good sound is acctually Jimmys at Cynical-minds effort, he mastred the songs for a long time and sent us snippets until we we're pleast with them
tell me about the labels Cynical Minds Recordings
A newly started label with lot of potetial, We had a meeting last week and they are some really nice and fun guys. It's alot like a family, we help each other with diffrent things, comes up with new ideas. We feel very free in this company and there is an ambition we like from the companys side.
How is the current promotional tour going for supporting this album?
Our records caompany is negotiating with some promo agensys in Germany, so hopefully we will have some touring in Europe in next winter/spring and if we're lucky playing at the big festivals next year. If you like our music, please invite us!
What are your views on the current state of this electro scene in Sweden. in terms of creativity and audiences? And the scene in other countries?
There are som fatastic bands here in our country, signed and unsigned, everything from the softest synthpop, to the harshes noise bands, but the're are not many scenes to play on, very few festival with electronic music, it's a shame I thing, when there's so many tallented bands
you have very nice album and many many more tell me about lyrical compositions what you can tell about the done work? How does your music creation process work? How do you create a song?
Often Stefan have some idea for a song, he's writing almost all of the lyrics and have some idea how it going to be build, Torbjörn put some intresting sound to the skelleton of the song, then Stefan makes a melodi tune. From there we build it up together with beats more sound moore ideas, then we call it a rest, and listen to it for a week, the we have new ideas for the song and so on and so on until we have a deadline (or else we can change the song forever). We always send what we have done to the producers and the they come up with some ideas.
I Stefan (who is writing the lyrics) wants to say something with my music, I listen very often to what others have written and react. I'm an emotionall person and this is my chanell to get everything from my chest out to you
Out of all of your numbers, which number would you say is your favorite number? Why?
69, because it's nice :) just kidding, I think we can’t put up a favorite number together
Tell me more about all your music? What is currently inspiring your material as an artist? tell me all about the dark scene of sweden?
We live in some quite ruogh neighbourhood, we get a lot of inspiration from where we live and people we meet, and of caurse other artist work. There is great bands in the dark scene but there is not a big scene for that kind of music, but who knows, maybe in the future.
How did you come up with the name of your band,Captain Orange?
It's our big secret, we maybe will reviel the secret when doomsday comes what is the key to making music from Captain Orange? The key is having fun doing songs and play them live and what inspires you to keep growing as a musician? Critic, construktiv critic!
What ideas, movements and personalities would you say were crucial for the definition and development of Captain Orange as a creative entity?
A very good question! Haven’t thought about it
If there was one thing you want people to know about your band what would that be?
Please don`t tempt us do do stupid things, cause we like challenges!
Tell us a little bit more about Captain Orange What do you do in your spare time?
We both have a full time job besides captain Orange, Torbjörn like fotografie , movies and games. Stefan is studying halftime and likes reading thick books about complicated things in human nature, coocking goumet food and drink exclusive wines.
What do you think of its intermingling with the electro, Darkwave and EBM scenes?
while electro is your main musical pallet, what other music do you listen to? Torbjörn is more of a symphonic and progressive metal dude, Stefan listen to a lot of Balkan brass music and a lot of Morrissey
How long have you been in the music industry and how has it changed over time? Now I have to ask, what's the inspiration for the Captain Orange story?.
Look at the Please let us know about your upcoming plans, some new releases you like to confirm here. Yes one in may and one in autumn/winter, the titles is not yet fixed
How and why did you begin to make music?
We made music since we we're small kids but not together (we learn to know each other when we we're 20) But we like each others company and differences makes us go further from our egos and take the synergy effect into the music
Why various electronic styles?
Cause it's fun and you don't repeat you'reself by making the same song 12 times. We see the band as the old mix tape with you're favorite song, thats what we're trying to make on the albums and live
tell us about your unique style of music and who are your major influences?
We are not the one to ask about the special sound but i can recognise some sounds and harmonies from old sacred hymns.
Where do you typically get your inspiration for numbers?
from diffrent kinds of human behaviour and cultures. In our western culture diffrent numbers means diffrent things, we try to paint the song with words and numbers that are recognisable. It's a shame we don't share the same mytholgie any more it's harder to write lyrics everybody understands, but in the long term it will be a good thing, maby we'll get a universal mythological and numerological system....
On question about influences and inspirations about Sweden? Are you currently working on or planning any new releases? Are you working on any current or future projects? What is the future for your music?
