Featuring Interferenze | Interview by Ruud Dreessen aka ebm-industrial.nl | 18 januari 2010 10:04

1- For the first question will be - do you know the netherland?
Yes, of course! We do know Netherland! It's a great country with many awesome clubs, we are looking forward to play there!

2- Do you follow the electronic music scene, do you have any other favourite bands?
Today's electronic music is really interesting. Since boundaries have been overcame, electronic music has started to influence different styles. In the last years we have appreciated very much Soulwax and Innerpartysystem for example! But our favorites bands have older roots like The Cure, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and many more!

3- Could you please shortly introduce our readers your music project Interferenze Please fill also a biographical resume about how, when and where...give us a more background information?
We started around 2003. First couple of years have been dedicated to create our own sound. It took a while but we wanted to find a strong sonical identity. Being a duo project is quite a challange, but we believe to have an original position on the scene. Our sound is quite personal, in terms of compositions and arrangements! We simply started askin'ourself what we weren't able to find on the musical scene. We love different types of music from pop to more extreme sounds and we wanted to have different elements from these styles. Being italians doesn't help, since we are not very famous for alternative music but we are receiving more and more appreciation from all over the world and we are really glad for it.

4- How did you start to make Electronica / Rock / Industrial and what is Electronica / Rock / Industrial for you?
As we said before the starting point was to be able to create something different, we wanted to cross styles, that's how we started and that's the musical language we speak!

5- What and who are some of your influences in Electronica / Rock / Industrial?
We have a large background. From the early electronic projects as Kraftwerk we also like new wave bands as Ultravox, duran duran, Gary Numan and post-punk/dark bands as joy division and the cure. We also like the energy of rock, in our latest release "v1.2" we have celebrate the biggest rock band ever, Led Zeppelin, givin' our own vision of one of their track "immigrant song". Nine Inch Nails are also one of our favourites, Trent Reznor is a musical innovator, as well as a marketing genious!

6- What are your top ten favorite Electronica / Rock / Industrial Club Songs of all time? Who are you influenced by? What would you consider your favorite cd's?
List might be too long, let's try Bowie's "Low" and "Heroes". The Cure "pornography" and "disintegration" Depeche Mode "violator" and "some great reward". Duran Duran first album, Ultravox's Vienna. These are our roots, in more recent music we may named many alternative bands... But as we said, we do not have enough space for all of them! :-)

8- So tell me a bit more about yourself, such as musical?
We play since we were kids. We had various experiences with local bands finding the same olds troubles such people not involved enough on music and stuffs like that. Then we met on a  club and journey started.

9- By the way do you like my questions? tell me what you think about it! ;-)
We are trying to fill all of them, so we enjoy them very much!

10- What is the main idea, the message you want to leave to people who listens to you? What is your motto?
We do not have a Motto, we simply would expand people musical view. We think that usually people are too much stocked on categories. What we do can unite different audiences, because anybody can find something good for. That’s our goal! We are quite succesful since we are not a "real" EBM project but you felt that was good to give us a chance.

11- What’s the name of your band? What’s the origin of that name? Have you changed the band’s name before?
We didn't change the name. Interferenze (Interference in english) means very much for us. Our style is a kind of interference on today's scene. We always try to harmonize musical contrasts. That's an interference for sure!

12- Indelebile EP,Interferenze, and v1.2,where did the concept come from? and whats planned now that your album is finished? or anything else you're working on? Tell me why this title,Indelebile EP,Interferenze, and v1.2,Tell us a few words about the concept of this?
The first release was Indelebile. We worked on that project as a combination of different elements. The song was made as a red carpet soundtrack for AltaRoma Altamoda in 2006. That was a great experience thanks to Camilla Di Biagio who is our manager and she also was the producer of the 2006 project. She was very good on put things together: us, LeM Collection. It was a great success for all of us.

The "interferenze" record is a collection of a long period of sound experiments. Songs have been composed on a long period and we had a lot of chances to test them on live shows. During one of these show we met Tommy Bianchi. He was impressed by our project and he asked if we would be interested on mixing the record with him. Mixing was really good and the final touch has been done by Mr Tom Baker. He worked with big international names like Rob Zombie, Nine Inch Nails and Marylin Manson. We also worked with him (and Tommy as well) on "v1.2" which is the english version of some of the tracks included on the first record. We are planning a promotional period for both records and for sure you will see something good comin'out from both records.

13- When's the new album coming out?
Interferenze and v1.2 are both available on digital stores, distributed by Pirames Intermational. We also are going to have a physical release of both records as a double cd, which will be out of the first quarter of 2010. We are very excited about!

14-How is the current promotional tour going for supporting this album?
As we said, we are arrangin'it for 2010, and we also would play in your country if there will be the chance.

15- What do you think of a modern gothic and about Electronica / Rock / Industrial scene?
Today's scene is very interesting, especially when people tries different ways. We really love to hear new stuffs from challenging project. We think that music needs fresh air from time to time.

16- Our usual question - what is music for you?
Well... A million euro question! Music is more than an art, it's the only way we have to express our inner thoughts and emotions. Music overcomes playing and it goes straight to heart people.

17- What was your best live experience so far?
We had very cool experiences (some of them cannot be told here!!). The best ones are when we really can feel a connection with the audience. In that moment we really figure out WHY we love making music. It's so good to read people faces and to see how they enjoy the show!

18- Please list the name.
Jac sings and plays guitars and bass. Luca plays piano, synth and programmings.

19-What are your views on the current state of this Electronica / Rock / Industrial scene in Florence, Firenze Italia in terms of creativity and audiences? And the scene in other countries?
We don't know every single band in our area, because there are so many. We do like when creativity goes on new directions. We are quite bored by traditional approaches on music and playing, as well. We are more fashinated on the sound than on how good somebody can play. We love music details. Today a lot of band doesn't pay too much attention on HOW things are done. Technology helps a lot (especially on the electronic scene), but at the same time can be very dangerous if used on a wrong way. Anybody can make a record today, but once again it depends HOW. Sometimes you can listen to preset sounds or same guitar tones in many records, that's something that we try to avoid.

20- you have very nice numbers`.............. tell me about lyrical compositions what you can tell about the done work? How does your music creation process work? How do you create a song?
Since the beginning of the project we wanted to move further from our past experiences. We found something that works well for us. We always start from different combinations of sounds/melody/harmony. Then we try to combine them together. Sometimes can take few hours, sometimes whole months! Especially when we play around with sounds is a long process, but can also be very easy. For example there are a couple of guitar solos which are really unconventional. People do notrecognize that it's a guitar till when they see it live! Same for synth sounds: in "my resurrection" there are some weird sounds and people thinks that they are guitar parts! We combines improvised elements with elemetns coming out from long researches. Lyrics usually come at the end. Jac writes a lot on his books and when everything is ready he always shows up with good ideas. He does a lot of cut-up. It's very interesting. Many different concepts can be generated by using this method. The relation between subject and adjective changes. "Cut up" opens new frontiers!

21-What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
We are always in serious troubles answering to questions like this. We consider our music as electro/rock/industrial, but we have a much larger influences. We both love new wave music, but also rock. We share a lot of preferences but then we have some differences. Jac loves angry rock even hardcore metal, Luca is very involved with extreme electronic music.

22-Since the music industry is more open now to purely electronic music has this made things easier for you?
Since we are not into a single category we always have received different comments. In general people from music industry who doesn't have a traditional approach likes our stuffs, some of them still need to see a drummee on stage! We are lucky to work with very passionate and clever people and we are happy. Camilla does a great job and people around us does the same.

23-So what are their main influences as a band at the moment?
We are playing around with new stuffs. We are working on new materials and we are trying to move further. We are in a new mood. Electro is still something very inspiring, but we are going to a completely new direction. Nobody knows it yet which is.  We do know it. We have tons of new ideas and we are very confident that new stuffs will kick ass! We are workin' on a new sound, playing around the "song" style but with a new sound never heard before! We are very exciting, but at the same time we keep promoting "interferenze" and "v1.2" because we really think that both records can have a big impact on the audience!

24-What is currently inspiring your material as an artist? tell me all about the Electronica / Rock / Industrial scene of Florence, Firenze Italia?
As we said before we are moving on a new direction. We stopped thinking about playing and we only LISTEN to ourself as a music generator. That's very good because our egos are working just for the project. We do not need to play when no needed. If a song doesn't need guitar then no guitar will be there, or if a song need to be very simple we just use bass and guitar, not too many synths or programming. We do what we think good for the song. We have a lot of respect for artists as Brian Eno and David Bowie, as well as Trent Reznor, Robert Smith and Nick Rhodes. They are not brillant musicians but they know what to do in order to sound great!

25-Do you think that people from the music press didn't expect you to grow up musically?
If we kept doing things just to please the music press, we would have stopped  years ago. We have learned that best way to go is do what we want to do. Nobody can really change our musical view. We always listen what people says but we have the last word on music!

26-what is the key to making music from Interferenze and what inspires you to keep growing as a musician?
We are very selective and we never are happy. That's very good because we always think that we could do it better. Sometime could be dangerous because we could loose the focus, but we also know when a song is good enough to be ready! We grow as musicians forgettin' about rules. Very often good players forget that 90% of the audience doesn't care about technic, because they are more focused on the surface: melody, lyrics, song impact.  We have the same attitude, we do music for anyone. Our music doesn't sound friendly at the beginning but once you get used to it you can find something new every new listening. We have good melodies and cool grooves, but these are coming from a large exploration. Our goal is to turn complicated stuffs into easy ones!

27-How do you see the future of download / Copyright in area of goth-Electronica / Rock / Industrial music ? What are the best ways to develop it in your mind ?
That's interesting. People thinks that music is free. We can easly get all the new records in few minutes for free. Audience can listen much more music and that's good because it opens new frontiers! That's good but it's also risky. Music is an industry, when a record company had 3-4 good sellings acts, they were able to invest some money into new challenging acts. Today is different. Acts must pay for everything and there's no more a protection for record companies. One more thing is the way artists are considered by the record companies. Today you can have a chance but only with one song. If it won't sell you are done! Here comes the web. Artists can sell their own production without  anybody between them and the audience. The only problem is how to let audience know that you exist. It's easy for Radiohead to sell throught their website, they are popular. For us is different and much more difficoult. The only way to survive is playing live shows for covering expenses for getting a record done and for the investment on the record promotion. We are quite happy with latest results even if we still need to have a daily job. At least we can have the freedom to continue making good music!

28-If there was one thing you want people to know about your band what would that be?
We do not cheat you! Spend some times listening to our last records "interferenze" and "v1.2" and you will have a journey on a new world. That's for sure the best way to escape from a standard musical scene. Maybe we will find some uncommon sounds, but once you will get used to them you will be addicted. Try it and then if you are not satisfy with it drop us an email!!!
