Featuring "narcisse from stupre" Interview by Ruud Dreessen aka ebm-industrial.nl Date: 10 december 2009 21:23
Thanks narcisse that you have found time to give answers to these questions,
Stupre playing Cold Desire (original track Kaltes Verlangen by Kaos Frequenz) @ Les Messes Synthétiques in Marseille, 20/03/09
1- For the first question will be - do you know the netherland?
Yeah, for sure. This is a country we love. We use to go there quite often, especially Verge who knows Amsterdam very well. We can’t bear summer in France so we use to spend our holidays there each year. Last time we came was in August 2k9, so only some months ago. That was……..sweaty.
2- Do you follow the electronic music scene, do you have any other favourite bands?
We do listen to a lot of diferent styles but concerning the electronic scene, we are really interested in electro-gay club soudings. For now, our favorite bands are Teenage Bad Girl, Simian Mobile Disco or Boys Noize. Verge is also a lot into extreme metal, whereas i would rather listen to french hip hop.
3- Greetings Narcisse could you please shortly introduce our readers your music project Stupre Please fill also a biographical resume about how, when and where...give us a more background information?
It’s really between our two own personal worlds.I’m more going along with the european industrial scene whereas Verge doesn’t really belong to this genre. She would proudly say that yeah, she comes from the black metal scene.Concerning music, Stupre is a real mix of that two main influences. But we are both big fans of gore, like Takashi Miike’s movies. We also really appreciate artists like Lady Gaga, who gives us inspiration with her unique sens of avant-garde estheticism.
4- How did you start to make Electronica / Gothic / Religieus and what is music for you?
It all began during summer 2k8. We had a lot of free time, and Verge really hates the sunlight. We spent weeks alone with our dog in our flat. Stupre was born between two glasses of tequila and in a cloud of smoke. After a short time of experiencing softwares, we produced those tracks swiftly . Our different infuences help us creating something original quite spontaneously.
5- What are your top ten favorite Electronica / Gothic / Religieus Club Songs of all time? Who are you influenced by? What would you consider your favorite cd's?
I’d say first of all Youth by Peace Love and Pitbulls III. Definitely the darkest song ever and one of the most important album in my life. Marylin Manson and Trent Reznor quote him as a main influence too. They stopped now though Thastrom keep on composing music. I also really appreciate Skinny Puppy old stuff or good old Velvet Acid Christ albums such as Neuralblastoma or Church ov acid. Those albums were my first encounter with this scene and they were fucking great bands. Lately, i’ve been watching again Ain’t it dead yet. This is still so brilliant. I liked :W : Bloodchild and Bunkertor 7. But nowadays, i listen to Ambassador 21, Punish Yourself, Chrysalide or Lewsor. More industrial stuff. And NIN Broken. And Iamx. And Obszon Geschopf. But you can consider that’s Verge’s tastes are really diferent. She’d quote Emperor, Opeth, Anaal Natrakht, or Bloodbath. I do listen to this genre to but not all day long like she does.
6- So tell me a bit more about yourself, such as musical?
Verge plays black metal guitars for fun whereas i’m involved in FYD (Audiotrauma) as main singer since 2005. We released two albums and we play a lot in the european industrial scene. We played in London, Berlin, Stettin, Paris, Geneve, Bruxelles, Liège and many many more. I think that playing instruments is boring, so i just sing.
7- By the way do you like my questions? tell me what you think about it! ;-)
I think i’d rather speak directly and let you write it down.
8- What is the main idea, the message you want to leave to people who listens to you? What is your motto?
Stupre is french so Stupre is better than anything else. Aren’t you Stupre, are you ?
9- What’s the name of your band? What’s the origin of that name? Have you changed the band’s name before?
Stupre is a beautiful french word that means debauchery. It’s about indulgence in sensual pleasures. It also deals with scandalous activities involving sex, alcohol, or drugs without inhibition. It’s about give pleasure to each others.
10- When's the new album coming out?
Hey, hey, you lucky one, it’s just out now on Cortex Records .
11-How is the current promotional tour going for supporting this album?
Actually we have some proposals but we don’t accept much of them. We really expect good live conditions otherwise we’re not interested. We’ll play soon in France and in Germany in gothic fests in 2010. This should be ok. We’ll play in Switzerland, in the Netherland and in Belgium soon too We are available through Ant-Zen but promotion is done by Cortex Records,. They’re in the business for more than ten years. They used to organize big events in France, they produced french artists, they are still active through years. When the album was done, we’ve been looking for a label for only some weeks. They accepted it happily and quickly. It is such a pleasure that work with passionate people.
We plan to release another cd on Cortex Records in 2k10.
12- What do you think of a modern Electronica / Gothic / Religieus and Gothic scene?
I think for now we are a great modern Electronica / Gothic / Religieus band, so i believe everything is ok. We’ll know more about it when people will start to copy our music.
13- Our usual question - what is Electronica / Gothic / Religieus for you?
Our usual answer : what are we for Electronica / Gothic / Religieus ?
14- What was your best live experience so far?
We first played in Marseille @ Les Messes Synthétiques, which is a big venue in the south of France. That was a great ebm party with Schwester Seziert and N.T.R.S.N. We enjoyed it though for the first live we had to face stage and sound troubles. That was great, but our first live home in Strasbourg was a total mess and real madness. We really enjoyed that time. People were so excited and the party was set on a barge so everything was moving during the gig. That was awesome.
15- Please list the name, age, school, and respective instrument of each band member
Verge is the main componer. She’s quite goods at creating dark melody shapes and groovy beats. She creates patterns and movie samples. She’s 24 and got a master degree.
Narcisse is the main singer, he’s 28,and I am him. Oh well, he’s me.
16-What are your views on the current state of this Electronica / Gothic / Religieus scene in Frankrijk .in terms of creativity and audiences? And the scene in other countries?
There’s a lot here, yeah. Strasbourg is the birth town of Dolls of pain, Ex_tension, Audiotrauma crew, Cortex Records, Neon Cage Experiment, and many more.Booking good bands for a dark fest in Strasbourg is easily done. For more, all those bands are signed on labels, so working together is always interesting because they all got skills.Maybe i’ll tell you more about that but we do enjoy working and playing live together.
17- you have very nice numbers`.............. tell me about lyrical compositions what you can tell about the done work? How does your music creation process work? How do you create a song?
In a few hours. Either it works directly or we stop. Creating Priceless was easy and pleasant. You just need ideas and talent. For that reason, we got a lot of unused materials because when we stop producing, we never like to work again on the same track, and we start a new one. We always have ideas, only talent is fluctuent. Ahaha…
18-What genre of music do you consider your work to be?
I suppose it’s something like groovy hellectro-dark with style.
19-Since the music industry is more open now to purely electronic music has this made things easier for you?
I listen to electronic music since i was born. Even my father bought Kraftwerk vinyls. I’d rather believe that people who still don’t listen to electronic music are really really late. If the beat works fine, the track is ok. This is not a question of genre because nowadays, anyone can listen to anything. It’s just….2009.
20-So what are their main influences as a band at the moment?
Right now, Dodheimsgard, 666 international for Verge.La Ruine et Laruine, She buys me drugs for him.South Park and Lobo, the weimaraner.
21-what is the key to making music from Stupre and what inspires you to keep growing as a musician?
First find a groovy loop, add one bass arpegio, choirs, and delayed vocals led by cognac. But you definetly need the french touch. To make it easier, just use a good drumkick. For a beginning,, Verge creates patterns, i distort and break them with a sequenceur, then we look for movie samples and start to write about them. Lyrics are really important in developping Stupre view of the world, they all tell a disgusting short story and i’m quite proud of them. Finally, there’s only two step : 1) patterns 2) samples and vocals. But we’ll probably use guitars and blast beats soon.
22-How do you see the future of download / Copyright in area of Electronica / Gothic / Religieus music ? What are the best ways to develop it in your mind ?
Priceless is out as an album on Cortex Records. People still buy cds or like to offer cds. The object, as a book, is really symbolic. I think people are fed up of downloading. This is not as fun as it used to be in early 2000. As far as i’m concerned ,i buy cd’s i like and Stupre sells cd’s, so everything’s quite ok for me.
But for sure, downloading is worth using so we dealt with Believe Digital for files sales. I noticed it works well, especially for intercontinental business.
23-If there was one thing you want people to know about your band what would that be?
We are dark, outrageaous and hot, and we’ll make you sweat.
24-Please let us know about your upcoming plans, some new releases you like to confirm here
Yeah, 20 tracks are already done with friends of us such as Dolls of pain, Ambassador 21, Kaos Frequenz, ZNO, Ex_Tension… We have a lot of unreleased stuff, like versuses, remixes etc. Should be like a big compilation of unreleased hit singles and b-sides. We are also working wit ha drummer right now so as to develop even more groovy beats.
25-It has been a pleasure to interview you on your musical activity,Well, any last words to your ebm-industrial fans?
Oh my god, I mean Oh myself.
26-and what is next on Frankrijk agenda?
Live @Dark Fest in Bordeaux in January, 1200 km away from Strasbourg. Gonna be a long trip. As usual, we’ll have sex in the train.
27-thanks for your time! great work on the albums and good luck with everything.any How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?
Check our myspace, everything’s here. Go buy the cd and curse yourself.
28-Were you asked to play or did you have to ask for a slot?
Begging for a slot doesn’t look very ……Stupre. For now, we’ve been asked to play. Let’s hope it will go on like that.
Bye,
N .
